I have never owned a Buffalo Bills jersey before.
As a kid, they were way too expensive to even think about
asking for one. For much of my adult life, I was a sportswriter, and such
blatant homerism would have been totally uncool.
A few weeks back, the local youth sports association in my
town raffled one off at a football game. An authentic number game-worn by the
largely forgotten Darick Holmes.
Those who remember the running back recall a few good games
in relief of Thurman Thomas in the mid-‘90s, and a brutally pivotal fumble in
San Francisco, which the 49ers returned for a decisive fourth-quarter touchdown
in the sort of loss to which Bills fans have grown accustomed.
Anyway, I won the raffle and am wearing the jersey to Ralph
Wilson Stadium today for the home opener against Kansas City. So if you’re at
the game, or watching at home, keep your eyes open for the tall guy wearing the
blue No. 44 Holmes jersey.
I am pretty sure I will be the only one.
(Note: This will also stand as the day’s open thread, since
I have little confidence in my ability to post via mobile phone from the
stadium. So have at it in the comments below. Please keep the racism, homophobia and links to
pornography to a minimum.)
