Figuring they could not do any worse in the wake of E.J. Manuel's knee injury and Jeff Tuel's Thursday-night meltdown, given what's out there, the Bills coach Doug Marrone announced that Thaddeus Lewis will be promoted from the practice squad to start against Cincinnati on Sunday.
According to hasty work by the We Want Marangi research squad, this will mark the first time a quarterback named Thad has ever started an NFL game. If that's wrong, please correct us in the comments below, and those responsible will be sacked.
Lewis started Cleveland's season finale last year, and unlike Tuel against the Browns on Thursday, at least looked like he might belong in an NFL uniform.
The Bills signed Lewis after Kevin Kolb's most recent concussion ended his season, and quite possibly his career. Lewis did not look awful after replacing quarterback-for-a-quarter-and-a-half Matt Leinart, who did. You can see every throw and scramble he made in an exhibition against Detroit right here, including a 79-yard hookup with Marcus Easley:
Of course, Tuel looked halfway decent playing against other teams' backups and training-camp fodder, too. The Bills were so impressed with Lewis, they cut him and re-signed him to the practice squad. So at least he's familiar with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett's system. And he went to Duke, so he's probably pretty smart.
As for the other failed fourth-stringers the Bills worked out over the weekend, former Steelers backup Dennis Dixon reportedly went home and ex-Miami Wildcat guy Pat White is on his way to work out for the Raiders, according to ESPN.com, but could still sign with Buffalo to help ensure Tuel does not have to play again in a game that counts.
